While divine capriciousness or magic were long held responsible for the weather, the Age of Enlightenment held the prospect of controlling the weather as our understanding of it grew. The first evidence of this early weather research is Goethe's Essay on Meteorology (1825). This text aims to explain the climate in its wider context through precise observation. In doing so, it develops a great poetic power, even if the attempt itself has failed from a modern scientific point of view.
In a poetic series of images, Jakob Altmayer and his team approach the increasing loss of control that we are currently experiencing as a result of the noticeable change in weather conditions. Although today's meteorological calculations are more accurate than those of Goethe, the weather is increasingly eluding our grasp and confronting us with our dependence on and vulnerability to the weather conditions that surround us.
Beyond catastrophic narratives, the production searches for a sense of hope that arises from recognising the unavailability of the weather.
